Baylor Rolls UCF 41-9, Tulane Steals One in OT and the Mavericks End Houston’s Perfect Start

Five and a Fade Daily: Baylor beats UCF 41-9, Tulane beats Charlotte 38-31 in overtime, Mavericks beat Rockets 116-111

Halloween Eve gave us one blowout, one comeback and one unbeaten team that isn’t anymore. Baylor rolled UCF 41-9, Tulane stole one in overtime at Charlotte, and Dallas handed Houston its first loss.

Baylor 41, UCF 9

Thursday I called this a coin flip. It was not a coin flip. DJ Lagway went 16 of 25 for 319 yards and four touchdowns, and Gavin Freeman caught five balls for 114 yards, including a 77-yard score that made it 34-6 in the third quarter. UCF’s quarterback threw for 133. Baylor moves to 5-3 and UCF falls to 4-4, which is exactly the bowl-sweat spot I said the loser would land in. Got that part right, at least.

Tulane 38, Charlotte 31 (OT)

Charlotte scored 24 points in the second quarter alone and led 31-21 with under 11 minutes to go. Tulane chipped back with a 27-yard Cooper Helmke field goal, then tied it on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Trace Johnson to Cameron Roberts with 10 seconds left. In overtime, Dagan Bruno ran it in from the 1, and the defense held. Johnson went 28 of 36 for 284. Tulane is 4-4 and alive. Charlotte is 1-7 and will be thinking about that last drive all week.

Mavericks 116, Rockets 111

Houston walked into Dallas 5-0 and walked out 5-1. Kyrie Irving had 35 points and nine assists, P.J. Washington grabbed 10 rebounds, and the Mavs got to 4-2. Kevin Durant scored 28 for Houston. Nobody goes 82-0, but I’d have liked to see the Rockets at least make it to November.
