Every week I find the one game where I think the crowd has it wrong, and I go the other way. That’s the fade, and it’s the whole idea behind the name.
Here’s the logic. When everybody in America is on the same side of a game, the line already knows it. The number gets set, and moved, with the crowd in mind. So by the time the whole world agrees on a team, a lot of the value in that team is gone.
That doesn’t mean the crowd is always wrong. The crowd is right plenty. It means that once a week, I go looking for the game where the hype got ahead of the facts: the team living off a preseason ranking, the team that beat nobody, the “everybody knows” game where nobody checked the résumé. Then I fade it.
So every week you get five picks and a fade. Five and a Fade. All free, every week, right here on fiveandafade.com.
And the deal is, I post the misses too. Sunday’s Jets fade fell short, and it’s on the site right next to the winners. Every result goes on the record page, good days and ugly ones. If I’m going to tell you the crowd is wrong, I’d better be willing to show you when I am.
This is about having fun with it and having a take. Nobody’s selling anything here.
