The Chargers Are 0-7 and the NFL’s Last Winless Team. Houston Gets the Next Shot

Five and a Fade card: the Los Angeles Chargers are 0-7, the NFL's last winless team

The Los Angeles Chargers lost 24-9 to the Rams on Sunday and fell to 0-7. They are the only team in the NFL without a win.

Here’s the whole season so far:

  • Cardinals 26, Chargers 14
  • Raiders 26, Chargers 14
  • at Bills 24, Chargers 16
  • at Seahawks 30, Chargers 23
  • Broncos 23, Chargers 17
  • at Chiefs 22, Chargers 6
  • at Rams 24, Chargers 9

That’s 99 points in seven games, 14.1 a game, dead last in the league. They haven’t scored more than 23 in any game, and every loss has been by six points or more. This isn’t a team losing coin flips. It’s a team that hasn’t been in a fourth-quarter fight it could win.

And it’s not like there’s a crowd down there with them. Miami is 1-6. The Titans are 1-7. Everybody else in the league has at least two wins. The Chargers are on an island, and the island is SoFi Stadium.

Now the good news, if you’re a Chargers fan looking for any: Houston comes to town Sunday at 3:05 p.m. Central on CBS, and the Texans are 2-5 themselves. That’s about as soft a landing as an 0-7 team is going to get. After that it’s a Monday night trip to Baltimore, then the 2-6 Jets at home.

My take: if it doesn’t happen Sunday against Houston, it’s going to be a long, quiet November in Los Angeles. You can check the standings on ESPN and tell me I’m wrong.
