The Vikings aren’t unbeaten anymore. Detroit beat Minnesota 19-15 at Ford Field on Sunday, Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 153 yards on 23 carries, and the Lions are 5-2.
Here’s how it was decided. Minnesota took a 15-12 lead with 8:44 left when Kyler Murray hit T.J. Hockenson for an 8-yard touchdown and then found Jordan Addison for the two-point conversion. Detroit answered right away: seven plays, 69 yards, and Jared Goff threw a 7-yard touchdown to Jameson Williams with 4:35 to go. The Vikings went three-and-out, punted, and the Lions ran out the last 2:53.
This game was won on the ground. Detroit ran for 230 yards to Minnesota’s 81 and outgained the Vikings 384 to 266. Gibbs had the Lions’ only rushing touchdown, a 30-yarder in the third quarter, and Jake Bates added two field goals. Minnesota’s other score was a 1-yard Murray touchdown pass to Justin Jefferson in the second quarter. Murray finished 17 of 29 for 210 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
My take: the Vikings are 6-1 and deserve the respect, but this is the team I’d least like to see in January. When Detroit can run it 230 yards on you and close a game with a four-minute drive, that’s a grown-up football team. Who wins the NFC North? I’m taking the Lions.
