Victor Wembanyama scored 43 points with six blocks and seven rebounds in 34 minutes Saturday night, and the Spurs beat Minnesota 121-111 for their fourth straight win.
He went 17 of 34 from the field, 3 of 8 from three and 6 of 9 at the line. The six blocks are the part that should scare people. Forty-three points is a great night. Forty-three points while erasing six shots at the other end is a different sport.
And he had help. Dylan Harper added 25 points, seven rebounds and six assists, and De’Aaron Fox put up 22 on 8-of-10 shooting with seven assists. Ayo Dosunmu led Minnesota with 27.
San Antonio started 0-2 with losses to Oklahoma City and Houston. Since then: Dallas, Sacramento, Utah and now the Timberwolves. That’s 4-2.
My take: we keep asking “when” the Spurs are going to be good. Wrong question. They’re good now. A 7-footer who can drop 43 and protect the rim like that is a matchup problem for every team in the West, and the guards around him are already producing. Book it: San Antonio is a top-four seed.
