Notre Dame Beats Navy to Get to 7-1, and Its Best Win Just Got Shut Out by Iowa

Jeremy Durham on a Five and a Fade card: Notre Dame is 7-1, who have they beaten?

No. 5 Notre Dame beat Navy 35-13 on Saturday to get to 7-1, and I’ll ask it again: name the best win. I said it this morning on video, and nothing at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough changed my mind.

Credit where it’s due. The Irish trailed a 2-6 Navy team 13-7 late in the second quarter, then Nolan James Jr. broke a 52-yard touchdown run with 55 seconds left in the half and Notre Dame scored the last 28 points. James ran for 107 yards and two scores. CJ Carr threw for 210 and two more, including a 31-yarder to Jerome Bettis Jr.

The résumé, one more time

  • Wisconsin (5-3). The best win on the board. Wisconsin just got shut out 30-0 at Iowa today.
  • North Carolina (4-3 going into tonight against No. 1 Miami).
  • Stanford, Purdue, Michigan State, Navy and Rice. None of them has a winning record.
  • The loss: 28-24 to BYU, the team that sat behind Notre Dame in the AP poll. We’ve been yelling about that one all week.

No win over a team that’s ranked right now. That’s not a knock on the players. It’s a question for the voters: how is that a top-five résumé when teams with real wins are sitting behind it?

Here’s the good news for Notre Dame: the answer is coming. No. 1 Miami comes to South Bend next Saturday, Nov. 7, at 6:30 p.m. Central, and SMU visits two weeks after that. Win those and I’ll say it out loud. Until then, our Top 10 ranks who you’ve beaten, not what your helmet looks like.
