Indiana Hosts College GameDay on Halloween With Isiah Thomas Picking, and It Is a Football School Now

Five and a Fade card: Indiana is a football school now. No. 4 Indiana vs. Minnesota, College GameDay in Bloomington

ESPN’s College GameDay spent Halloween morning at Showalter Fountain in Bloomington, Isiah Thomas was the guest picker, and No. 4 Indiana (7-1) hosts Minnesota (5-2) at 2:30 p.m. Central on CBS. Say it with me: Indiana is a football school now.

Look at who was in the guest chair. Isiah Thomas ran the point for Bobby Knight on the 1981 national championship team. For about forty years, that was the whole personality of Indiana sports: banners in Assembly Hall, and football was the thing you did until basketball started. Now the basketball legend is the warm-up act for the football team. That’s a flip.

The crowd brought it, too. “Happy Hooverween.” “Gopher Removal License.” “Do you like scary receivers?” And my favorite: a student holding up a LinkedIn link, asking for a summer internship. Somebody hire that kid. That’s initiative. Pat McAfee even led the whole crowd in “Happy Birthday” for Nick Saban, who turned 75 today.

Now the uncomfortable question. Indiana’s only loss is 19-15 to Ohio State, and this is a real playoff team. But look at the last three weeks: 20-17 at Nebraska, 15 points against Ohio State, 13-6 at Michigan. The defense is elite. The offense has been a grind.

Why that keeps me up: Indiana -19.5 is our Fade this week. The public piled onto Minnesota, so we went the other way, and ESPN has the line at 20.5 now. A team that scored 13, 15 and 20 the last three games has to win by three touchdowns. GameDay energy, do your thing.

If Indiana covers, I’m a genius. If it’s 17-6, I’ll be in the replies explaining “process.”
