Rays Walk Off the Brewers in the 12th Without Making an Out to Force World Series Game 5

Tampa Bay Rays 4, Milwaukee Brewers 3 in 12 innings, World Series Game 4 final score card

The Tampa Bay Rays were three outs from watching the Milwaukee Brewers celebrate on their field. Then they didn’t make one. Tampa Bay scored twice in the bottom of the 12th without recording an out and beat Milwaukee 4-3 in Game 4 of the World Series Tuesday night at Tropicana Field.

Milwaukee still leads the series 3-1. But I’ve seen enough October baseball to know a walk-off like that changes the air in a building.

How it was decided

  • Top 12: Cooper Pratt led off with a 396-foot home run to left-center off Ian Seymour. Brewers 3, Rays 2. That should have been the clincher.
  • Bottom 12: Junior Caminero reached on a throwing error by third baseman Joey Ortiz.
  • Liam Hicks singled to left off Shane Drohan, sending pinch-runner Cedric Mullins to third.
  • Jonny DeLuca singled to center. Tie game, 3-3.
  • Chandler Simpson singled to load the bases.
  • Pinch-hitter Ben Williamson lined a single to right, Nick Fortes scored, and the Trop lost its mind.

Five Rays reached in the 12th, and none of them made an out. That’s not a rally, that’s a home invasion.

Earlier, Simpson doubled in the game’s first run in the second, the teams traded runs in the fourth, and Milwaukee’s David Hamilton tied it 2-2 with a solo homer in the fifth. Then nobody scored for six innings. Both bullpens were spectacular until they weren’t.

Game 5 tonight

Game 5 is Wednesday at 7 p.m. Central on Fox, back at Tropicana Field. Jacob Misiorowski is listed to start for Milwaukee. The Brewers won 103 games for a reason, and they still need just one more win. My take: the Rays get one more night of momentum, but Milwaukee’s pitching wins this series. Brewers in five or six. Faders, does Tampa Bay send it back to Milwaukee?
