Oregon State’s Jesse Legree Leads the Nation in Receiving, and Jeremiah Smith Is Chasing Him

Jesse Legree of Oregon State leads the FBS with 1,040 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns

The leading receiver in college football isn’t Jeremiah Smith. It’s Oregon State’s Jesse Legree, with 1,040 yards and 14 touchdowns in seven games, per ESPN.

Smith is second with 984 yards for Ohio State, and he’ll get the Heisman buzz. Fine. But Legree is averaging 22.6 yards a catch. That’s not a receiver, that’s a kickoff return every time somebody throws him the ball.

  • His best day: 8 catches, 240 yards and 2 touchdowns against Texas Tech, in a loss.
  • Every game over 100: he’s gone for at least 100 yards in all seven.
  • Touchdowns: 3 against Colorado State, 3 against San Diego State.
  • The Beavers: 5-2, winners of five straight.

Here’s my take: if Legree did this in the SEC, he’d be on every Heisman list in America. He’s doing it in Corvallis, so half of you are meeting him right now. Stay up for this one. Oregon State plays at Fresno State on Saturday at 10 p.m. Central.
