Florida-Georgia Moves to Atlanta, Lower-Bowl Seats Hit $1,003, and Gator Fans Are Paying It Anyway

Florida vs. Georgia ticket card: the Cocktail Party moved to Atlanta, lower-bowl seats up to $1,003

Florida and Georgia are playing in Atlanta this Saturday instead of Jacksonville, and the cheapest way into the building is about $197 for an upper-deck seat. Lower-bowl tickets on StubHub are going for as much as $1,003, according to The Gainesville Sun.

And here’s the thing: it’s sold out anyway. Florida moved its whole allotment of 29,071 tickets by late August, and standing-room tickets just went on sale this week.

Let me say the quiet part out loud. This game is in Atlanta because of money. Each school gets a $7.5 million payout from the company that runs the Falcons. That’s a lot of money, and I get it. But the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party wasn’t built for a stadium in downtown Atlanta. It was built for the St. Johns River, RV lots and a stadium split right down the middle. Some things you don’t move.

Now, the case for Atlanta: Atlanta is a short drive from Athens and a long haul from Gainesville, and Florida’s first-year coach Jon Sumrall said himself it isn’t the Gators’ home turf. Which means Florida fans paying $1,000 to sit in a building where the other side has the shorter drive is either the most loyal thing in college football or the craziest. Probably both.

  • The game: Florida (5-2) vs. Georgia (6-1), Saturday, 2:30 p.m. Central on ABC, Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
  • The stakes: Georgia is 4-1 in the SEC, Florida 3-2. The loser takes a big hit in the SEC race.

My take: one year in Atlanta is a fun experiment. Make it permanent and you’ve traded a tradition for a check. Bring it back to Jacksonville. And if you need a reason to watch either way, we already made the case that Florida is underrated. Saturday is the Gators’ chance to prove it.
