Malachi Toney caught 16 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns Saturday as No. 1 Miami beat Pitt 52-23 to move to 7-0. We’ll say it: he’s the best receiver in college football.
The numbers
- Darian Mensah completed 31 of 37 passes for 387 yards and four touchdowns. Toney caught 16 of those 31 completions. More than half.
- His touchdowns went for 19, 53 and 11 yards.
- Pitt’s leading receiver, Cataurus Hicks, finished with 149 yards. Toney had 45 more.
How Miami won it
This one was over at halftime. Miami led 17-7 when Toney took a Mensah throw 53 yards for a touchdown with 1:50 left in the second quarter. Mensah hit Gavin Mueller from 3 yards out with 39 seconds left, and it was 31-7 at the break. Pitt never got closer than 24.
Our take
Sixteen catches is a full afternoon for most receiving rooms. Toney did it by himself, against a Pitt team that came in with a winning record, for a Miami team sitting at No. 1. If there’s a better wideout in the country, show us the tape.
