College Five and a Fade: Last Week Lies

College Five and a Fade: Last Week Lies

Start with the receipts. I went 4-2 last Saturday, and it was the kind of day you remember: BYU over No. 2 Notre Dame, Auburn over No. 1 Georgia, Kentucky winning at Oklahoma, Arkansas winning in Nashville. Add the Vols and that’s five underdogs I backed winning outright. The two misses were Mississippi State, shut out at LSU without its starting quarterback, and Indiana, which lost 19-15 to Ohio State.

So this week’s theme writes itself: last week lies. The betting market always overreacts to the most recent Saturday, and I think it did it again.

The five

1. Michigan +7 vs. Indiana. Indiana cost me last week, so I’m flipping. The Hoosiers just lost for the first time in 23 games and now have to win in Ann Arbor, where they haven’t won since 1967. The total has fallen 11 points to 41.5, and in a game that low, seven points is a lot of cushion.

2. Kentucky -11.5 vs. Vanderbilt. Same two horses as last week, different spot. Kentucky is 6-1 with a share of the SEC lead. Vanderbilt is 3-4, has dropped four straight and just lost at home to an Arkansas team that had lost 14 straight SEC games.

3. Oklahoma -3.5 at Mississippi State. I’ve already called the Bulldogs a team falling apart, so I’m not taking their points: 56-23 at home to Alabama, then 31-0 at LSU with their starting quarterback and running back hurt.

4. Houston +6.5 at Utah. Utah is unbeaten and Salt Lake at night is tough, but Houston just put up five touchdown passes against Oklahoma State. I think the Cougars keep it inside a touchdown.

5. Texas Tech -10.5 at Cincinnati. Unbeaten, three straight covers, facing a team on a two-game slide. Sometimes the better team is just the better team.

The fade: Auburn +7.5 vs. LSU

Everybody saw LSU 31, Mississippi State 0, and the line jumped a full point. Look closer: the Bulldogs played without their quarterback and running back, and LSU lost at Kentucky the week before. Now the Tigers go to Jordan-Hare to face an Auburn team that just beat the No. 1 team in the country. I rode Auburn last week and I’m not getting off now.

The Vols get their own column. Short version: Tennessee +2.5 and the moneyline at South Carolina.

College: 4-2 last week, 7-3 on the season with the Vols · Vols against the spread: 3-1
