Vols vs. Texas: Settling Which UT Is the Real One

There are two UTs. One was educating Tennesseans in 1794. The other opened in 1883, struck oil and has been trying to buy history ever since. One has a checkerboard end zone. The other has a steer.

Welcome to Knoxville

No. 1 Texas at No. 14 Tennessee was the Longhorns’ first trip ever to Neyland and the first regular-season meeting between the two UTs. Texas went 0-5 against the spread on the road the year before. Their eyes may be upon you. Ours come with 101,000 seats and a sound system.

The quarterbacks

Arch Manning had dragged Texas back from 20 down to beat No. 1 Ohio State, then looked ordinary against UTSA. On our side, Faizon Brandon, the youngest quarterback ever to start at Tennessee, threw for three touchdowns and ran for two in his debut.

What I watched for

Tennessee had 896 rushing yards through three games to Texas’ 525. Move the chains, keep Manning on the sideline and let Neyland do the rest. The worry was penalties: Tennessee ranked 119th in penalty yards. The line moved from 7 to 4.5, tying the smallest spread the Vols had faced against a No. 1 team since 1997.

The pick

Vols 31, Texas 27. Texas won 20-17. Wrong winner, right side of the number: Tennessee +4.5 covered, and the Vols had eight more first downs than the No. 1 team in the country and had them sweating to the final play.

Pick: Tennessee +4.5 (predicted Vols 31, Texas 27) · Result: Texas 20, Tennessee 17 (covered) · Vols against the spread: 1-0
